Our Review Methodology
Every tool on PlainAI is tested by real people doing real tasks. Here is exactly how we decide what makes the cut.
We test with free plans first
Most people are not paying $20 a month for AI tools they have never tried. So we start where you start – the free tier. If a tool is not useful on the free plan, we say so. If the paid version is genuinely worth it, we explain exactly why.
We evaluate for non-technical people
Our reader is a busy parent, a full-time worker, or someone who has never used AI before. The test is simple: can a normal person figure this out in 10 minutes without a tutorial? If it takes a manual to get started, that matters and we tell you.
We focus on real tasks, not benchmarks
We do not run AI tools through technical benchmarks. We ask: does this actually help you write a better email? Transcribe a meeting? Plan meals for the week? Real tasks, real results. If a tool scores well on benchmarks but falls flat in everyday use, it will not rank well here.
We are honest about limitations
Every tool has weaknesses. We call them out clearly, even for tools we recommend. A good review is not a sales pitch – it is an honest summary of what a tool does well and where it falls short. You deserve to know both before you spend time or money.
We update our reviews
AI tools change fast. A tool that was mediocre six months ago might be excellent today – and vice versa. We revisit and update our reviews when tools release major changes. Each review notes when it was last tested so you always know how current the information is.
No pay-to-play
Tools do not pay to be featured on PlainAI and they cannot pay to improve their ranking. Our recommendations are based entirely on usefulness to our readers. If a tool is not worth your time, it will not appear on this site regardless of who makes it.
Affiliate links – disclosed upfront
Some links on PlainAI are affiliate links. If you click and buy, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This is how we keep the site free. It does not affect our ratings or recommendations – we only link to tools we have reviewed and would genuinely recommend to a friend.
